An Analysis of Youthful Rebellion and Social Change in A Clockwork Orange and The Hunger Games - Literature Essay Samples

â€Å"Is it better for a man to have chosen evil than to have good imposed upon him?† (Burgess 86). In his 1962 classic A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess explores the concept of dystopian societies by employing his 15-year-old rebellious anti-hero, Alex, to demonstrate the effects of an oppressive and struggling government. Alex in many ways can be identified as a combatant against the State, rebelling against the resulting mundane and suppressive social environment through carrying out malevolent deeds such as rape, murder, and theft with his friends, or—as termed in the novel’s slang English dialect nadsat—his â€Å"droogs†. In addition, Katniss Everdeen in Suzanne Collins’ 2008 novel The Hunger Games commits several unruly actions in order to assert her position as an insurgent against the dystopic State of Panem and its Capitol. It is evident that both of the central characters in each of these narratives apply their youthful and rebellious efforts, as a symbol for wishing to alter the social conditions of each of their dystopic environments . The primary setting in Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange is a semi-futuristic and unspecified English-speaking city, ruled by a Government that Burgess portrays as having qualities of both American capitalism, and Russian communism. This odd State also attempts to suppress its citizens and their free will, predominantly in pursuit of stability for the Federation and to protect its longevity. For example, Alex’s parents, Pee and Em, are two ordinary civilians completely regulated by the State’s impositions. They have a nuclear family, possess virtually no lives or hobbies outside of their banal State jobs, and in contrast to their devious son Alex, the two are not motivated to create and pursue goals outside of their regular everyday endeavors. These subdued and complacent characteristics are true for many of this society’s inhabitants, however it is imperative to note that there is a strong presence of disobedient youth like Alex that, to a degree, use â€Å"ul tra-violence† and crime to rule over the contending justice system. Through analyzing the contrast of these demographics in Burgess’ dystopic society, it is clear that the conditions generated by this suppressive government create a strong binary social system. As the first quote in this essay blatantly illustrates, the overarching theme tested in A Clockwork Orange is the battle and disparity between good and evil. More specifically, adopted evil over inflicted good. This concept can be interpreted as rebellion in itself, as choosing to oppose what the State is inflicting upon its people is a classic example of systematic disobedience. For example, in chapter four of part one, Alex disputes with his Post-Corrective Advisor P.R. Deltoid about the origins of rebellious behaviour. Alex states: Badness is of the self, the one, the you or me on our oddy knockies, and that self is made by old Bog or God and is his great pride and radosty. But the not-self cannot have the bad , meaning they of the government and the judges and the schools cannot allow the bad because they cannot allow the self (40). Essentially, Alex argues that sinfulness is an inherent part of man, and if one cannot accept his or her own human nature, then one will never experience the essential evil that exists within. This can also be interpreted as Alex making a point that the Government seeks to destroy an entire part of its citizens’ natural essence, but he makes it obvious that he will not allow that to happen to himself. By making this statement, Alex has also asserted his position as a conscientious rebel against the system. As previously stated, Alex not only speaks of his disapproval of the State, but he actively demonstrates his rebellion with his friends Dim, Pete, and Georgie. The three â€Å"droogs† consistently find themselves up to no good, constantly seeking destruction and terrorism in order to maintain their positions in society. Their first, most brutal infraction that supersedes the negligible violence of chapter one, is when the boys steal a car, break into a cottage, and assault the occupants. What is interesting about this rampage specifically, is that the man who owned the cottage was a writer. Alex had previously expressed his distaste for literature in chapter one, when he tore up the books that belonged to the old man he and the boys attacked on their way back from the Korova milk bar. Perhaps it was the drugs infused in the milk they drank that night, but it seems as though Alex has a specific antipathy towards writing. When Alex discovered that the man who owned the cottage w as a writer, he stated: â€Å"It’s a book,† I said. â€Å"It’s a book what you are writing.† I made the old goloss very coarse. â€Å"I have always had the strongest admiration for them as can write books.† Then I looked at its top sheet, and there was the name—A CLOCKWORK ORANGE—and I said: â€Å"That’s a fair gloopy title. Who ever heard of a clockwork orange?† Then I read a malenky bit out loud in a sort of very high type preaching goloss: â€Å"—The attempt to impose upon man, a creature of growth and capable of sweetness, to ooze juicily at the last round the bearded lips of God, to attempt to impose, I say, laws and conditions appropriate to a mechanical creation, against this I raise my sword-pen—† Dim made the old lip-music at that and I had to smeck myself. Then I started to tear up the sheets and scatter the bits over the floor, (21-22). It is made clear through his final cruel actions that Alex’s initial expression of admiration for authors was sarcastic, as he has made a complete mockery of this man. Alex ostensibly has contempt towards anybody that contributes to the success of the State, and for citizens that carry out their mundane jobs and think like everyone else does. The destruction of literature in history represents an element of censorship, and is routinely an extension of an opposition to the contents of the books in question. Ironically, however, the contents of the book that the man was writing seem to go along with what Alex believes in; that oppressive laws should not be imposed upon creatures capable of so much more. As if it were not enough for Alex and his droogs to breach this man’s privacy and destroy his work, the boys proceed to physically assault him and take turns raping his wife while he was forced to watch. It is indisputable that the rape consummated by the boys is not in pursuit of sexual pleasure, but it is an act to declar e power and dominance in opposition to the oppressive environments they live in. Later on in the novel after Alex undergoes â€Å"Ludovico’s Technique† as part of his Reclamation Treatment in prison, the reader is finally able to see the extent to which this dystopic State is willing to go to eradicate evil and enforce good upon its people. The brainwashing is a forthright mechanism employed to ensure the Government’s complete and utter control over the thoughts, actions and ambitions of its citizens. It essentially diminishes an individual’s ability to exercise their right to choose. Definitively, Alex ends up losing the free-will he used to pride himself on. This brings us back to the first quotation of the essay, â€Å"Is it better for a man to have chosen evil than to have good imposed upon him?† (86). This makes the reader ponder whether it is better to lead a life of choice and freedom, or a life of capitulation. It is not Burgess’ intent to defend Alex’s violence, however, it is his aim to preserve existenti alism. In the end, the concept of free will is reinforced when Alex has a spontaneous remission from his previous brainwashing and becomes his old violent self again. Successively, however, he becomes tired of his malicious actions and decides that he wishes to—once again—exercise his freedom of choice, and lead a life of non-violence and settle down with a wife and children. It is true that Alex lives a life of free-will for most of the novel, using his violence as a rebellious tool to combat the rest of society, who consistently behave as a passive horde. Similarly, Katniss Everdeen in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games acts as an insurgent against the oppressive and totalitarian Capitol of Panem. Panem is the main setting in The Hunger Games, and is the futuristic result of the natural disasters that have totaled North America. Panem is divided into 12 Districts, each district increasingly poorer than the last. Katniss, a frustrated and destitute 16-year-old citizen of District 12, does whatever she can to protect her little sister and mentally-ill mother; even if it means disobeying the law. Her first act of rebellion against the oppressive State is when she illicitly abandons the perimeters of her district to hunt for food. Even though trespassing in the woods is illegal and poaching carries the severest of penalties, more people would risk it if they had weapons. But most are not bold enough to venture out with just a knife. My bow is a rarity, crafted by my father along with a few others that I keep well hidden in the woods , carefully wrapped in waterproof covers. My father could have made good money selling them, but if the officials found out he would have been publicly executed for inciting a rebellion (Collins 5). In just the first few pages of the novel, Katniss discloses her outright refusal to conform to the Capitol’s ridiculous subjugation of the Districts. She has openly stated that if she were to be caught, she would be severely punished, and possibly accused of conspiracy because of her hand-crafted weapon. However, Katniss is not willing to accommodate the inhumanity brought on by the Capitol. As Katniss says, â€Å"‘District Twelve. Where you can starve to death in safety,’† (6). She is willing to risk her own life in order to assert her position against the Federation and to ensure that her family gets the food they need. Just as Alex loathes how the Government in A Clockwork Orange forces citizens to become mindless creatures of habit, Katniss despises how the Capitol treats and exploits the poorer Districts. And just like Alex, Katniss does not complain about these problems. She allows her actions to speak for her, by doing what the Capitol expects her not to do. â€Å"But what good is yelling about the Capitol in the middle of the woods? It doesnt change anything. It doesnt make things fair. It doesnt fill our stomachs. In fact it scares off nearby game† (14). Through her inner monologue made possible by first-person narration, the reader can tell that Katniss would rather exercise her rebellion than voice it. Similar to the fact that Alex would rather rape, pillage, and fight than start an organized protest, Katniss would rather hunt and forage outside the District limits, and illegally trade her game at the Hob than complain. In an ideal world, Katniss would not live in a District where su stenance is unfairly rationed, and where she would not have to sell her safety for food. So, until that becomes true, she will continue to rebel to get what she both needs and wants. Katniss’ second act of rebellion against the Capitol is when she volunteers to take the place of her sister, Prim, in the Hunger Games. However, Katniss volunteered after Prim’s name was called, which is not in compliance with the rules of the games. The rule is that once a tributes name has been pulled from the ball, another eligible boy, if a boys name has been read, or girl, if a girls name has been read, can step forward to take his or her place. In some districts, in which winning the reaping is such a great honour, people are eager to risk their lives, the volunteering is complicated. But in District 12, where the word tribute is pretty much synonymous with the word corpse, volunteers are all but extinct (22). Again, Katniss has proven that she is willing to contravene the Capitol’s authority to ensure the safety of her family, and to assert herself as an insurgent.. And because volunteers are so rare, the Capitol allowed the act of disobedience in order to make the show more interesting. Perhaps Katniss has even begun a revolution where friends and families of chosen tributes are permitted to volunteer in each other’s place. In essence, Katniss has used her youthfulness as an eligible tribute to spark social change. This is gratified when the crowd at the reaping grants her with a silent salute. â€Å"Then something unexpected happens†¦At first one, then another, then almost every member of the crowd touches the three middle fingers of their left hand to their lips and holds it out to me†¦It means thanks, it means admiration, it means good-bye to someone you love† (24). Finally, Katniss displays her most significant act of youthful rebellion by performing Rue’s burial during the games. â€Å"I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do that there is a part of every tribute they can’t own. That Rue was more than a piece in their Games. And so am I† (236-237). It was an act that had never been done before. It was an act to show the Capitol that she was fed up with the ir statutes, regulations and behaviour. She rebelled against not only the Capitol, but the social norms that had been practiced in the Hunger Games for years imposed by the Gamemaker; that they should never show mercy for each other. Preceding Rue’s burial, Katniss and her opponent Peeta execute their final act of rebellion by threatening suicide and not accepting the Gamemaker’s rules, that there has to be one last man standing after a fight to the death. Both Alex and Katniss do not accept the social conditions of the places in which they live. The two use their youthful rebellion as a metaphor for social change in each of their societies, and do so risking their own individual safety. They both refuse to conform to the behaviour practiced by the majority of those that surround them. Alex and Katniss perform actions that both put them at risk for incarceration and oppose the actions of their peers. These two dystopic narratives, A Clockwork Orange and The Hunger Games, both portray protagonists that attempt to spark a societal revolution. Works Cited Burgess, Anthony. A Clockwork Orange. Conformity by Rebellion free essay sample

The American way of life has destroyed our individuality while pretending to cater to it, and the natural interdependence Of society has been compromised by the shrieks Of mass media and the cubicle farms they call workplaces. We are all gearing up for some heavy sit, all around the world. The yuppies are putting together their silly stock option plans, the Pakistanis are aching for jihad against India, the major labels are trying harder than ever to saturate our culture with Limp Backbit bullwhip and kill Anapest while theyre at it.To me, it fits together like a puzzle. Its all related. This is more than a complaint about social differences. Its about human nature. Stick around; I think I can prove this. The hippie and freak hordes would have us believe than they are the sole bastions of non- conformity and acceptance left in America. They are not. I really dislike stories like Hans Christian Andersens The Ugly Duckling. Not all ugly ducklings turn into swans. Some of us turn into ugly ducks. We need to learn to accept it, and to find that being an ugly duck isnt really necessarily all that bad, cause going with the flock isnt always the best or most satisfying way to go, even if it does seem like the easiest I was never one who fit in with my peers. From the day I began school at the age of five, it was obvious that I was somehow different from the rest of them. Since I was hyperactive, kind of shy, and too intellectual to be popular, rarely had many friends, and at times found myself a subject of ridicule, mocking, and outright abuse. My first ploy, which lasted for a number of years, was to attempt to conform. This was very much a failure. Its basically impossible for a square peg to fit into a redefined and uniformly drilled round hole. So try as I might to bang myself into the acceptable state of existence, I couldnt, and it was apparent to all the nice, shiny cute little round pegs that I was a wannabes. So I went the opposite direction. At around the age of eleven, became a rebel. I deliberately swam upstream; intentionally bucking every convention I could think of. Ore odd jewelry, which got me quite a reputation. I got my ears pierced in strange ways in an era where dual piercing were unusual; I wore Odd clothes, like jeans with holes in them (when they came into fashion a few ears later I stopped wearing them). I went out of my way to annoy, shock, and irritate the primarily working class and middle class people around me. Yes, I was still an outcast. Yes, was still drawing a lot of negative comments and being picked on, but felt as if I were in control (at least more in control) because I was now doing something to draw criticism.I got to the point where sort of took pride in being able to rile the mundane by having the amazing audacity to be different. Then, one day, I realized, In fact, that wasnt all that revolutionary. I was following a well-established pattern and ad a lot in common with all the other rebels. Was different, just like them. And truth be told, I wasnt all that radical. I mean I had purple hair, but not a Mohawk, facial piercing or anything really shocking. I was just a rebellious kid looking for trouble. I had conformed.By trying to be different by being provocative and shocking, I had become just like all the others. I had become just another sheep in the flock. I chose to reflect on the poem by Laurence Dunbar, We Wear The Mask. The poem shows how people wear a facade from the world. We all wear masks in front of others whether it is reposeful or naturally. It shows how people hide the way they really feel. It seems so many people in this world wear masks. So many are afraid to show others what theyre really like. Its amazing what problems can come from it; Problems that may not have existed if the masks werent there.Everyone wishes to feel accepted in life, and the character in Dunbar poem is no exception. We wish to fit in with our peers, so we wear the mask that grins and lies. (Dunbar, ). We will hide what we really feel so that we may feel accepted. On the other hand, no one likes being humiliated. It is a Orrville experience and most people would do anything to avoid it. Most would wear a mask while smiling with torn and bleeding hearts. (Dunbar, So we hide our true feelings to avoid humiliation. So, one uses a mask to hide behind.Whether it is from humiliation or non-acceptance, people will use masks to hide their true emotions, and pretend that everything okay. Everyone has his or her own masks to wear. Some people wear their masks by choice, other times it is just horrible fate that people end up with what they have. NOTHING is perfect. But, at the same time, perfection lies in the imperfect world. I know that sounds like a contradictory thing to say But perfection is something to stumble upon. Our own hands cannot create it; its something that the fates can only control.Embrace chaos before it bites you in the ass. Thats my thought for the day. The subject of W. H. Deadens Unknown Citizen not only has to do with one particular mans life, but could apply to the life of just about anyone. The theme of the poem is that the man being discussed in this section is an all round normal guy. Many of his attributes resemble the typical person. W. H. Aden enriches this poem not only by having an implicit theme but also through the use of such elements of poetry such as, rhyme, speaker, setting, and situation.A hero system is protocols by which certain people dependent on the rewards they receive and what they have accomplished receive notoriety and publicity. The hero system in our country does not benefit the people of this nation in any fashion. All Americas hero system does is provide the general public with entertainment. Addends Unknown Citizen typifies the idea of a man left to rot in a society that he has given his livelihood to. In his poem this individual .NET through life working for the common good of a community, which he may not have completely agreed with.He worked for it anyway. He worked for his family. He paid his union dues as a symbol of trust in the good that the many could do, yet he did not even receive a tombstone with his name on it upon his death. Aden gives the reader a clear image of how seemingly insignificant this hard working individual was to society. Not only does a hero system exist in America today, but also, just as in Addends poem, many hard working Americans go ungratified for their hard work and dedication. There are many reasons that Aden may have written a poem about such a closed minded society. It would seem that Addends Unknown Citizen might be condemning himself to a life of hard work and frustration without gratification. The other side of the spectrum reveals an even more socialistic idea. How important is it that people always must be recognized for the work they do. Why is it that people cant just do good things for their community and sit back to enjoy them rather than getting all fussy over whether or not they are going to get anything for it. Is the self- satisfaction not enough? It seems as though it was for Addends Unknown Citizen, but it seems to me that there are people out there that give of themselves for the good of the community and the country that do deserve recognition for their efforts. Police officers, firefighters, and teachers just start a very long list of under paid and under-appreciated job titles in America today. That does not even include that thousands of Americans that do social or volunteer community work during their own time to help better the bond that tie American communities together. So in the end, this man died, he informed by everyday standards, but these standards were made by conformity. The union itself is some form of rebellion. By being apart of that group, he conformed to the rebels standards. A cultural movement is a cultural movement; be it hippie, skater punk, rave trash or otherwise. Nobody wants the whole world to live in peace as one big happy family. Its contrary to instinct. We all want to be the bodhisattva in the flowing robes who dictates the gospel to the rest of the world. And thats not the way things work. This world has winners and losers, geeks and popular kids.Junior high pupates itself until you are dead. So whats a rebel to do? Dont know. Try reading. Jack Kerouac is not still a best selling author because of his cool Gap khakis. A nation of people din t follow Lenin into almost 80 years of collectivist silliness because of his natty goatee and adorable accent. Or try remembering these simple rules: 1. ) Rebellion is free. 2. ) Rebellion does not come in six different colors. 3. ) Rebellion does not have a soundtrack and a movie deal in the works. 4. ) Rebellion is not found in a piercing store, tattoo parlor, drug store, hash pipe or a Question Titration movie.

Main composers characteristics Paper The sounds of a galloping horse, the steady reassuring tones of the father, sweet enticements of he Elf King, the increasingly frantic cries of the boy, are all left to the machinations of the composer. Schubert had a distinctive talent for creating music that depicted both the spirit and nuance of the text; the voice and the piano expressed every shade and color of the poem. Schubert Earl ¶nigh is termed a through-composed art song. Schubert also created the song cycle?a well-thought-out group of individual songs that together tell a story, similar to a concept album. Alliterated is a German word indicating an informal evening gathering during which Lieder (art songs) are reformed. Schubert held Cafeterias a social gathering for music and poetry and Lieder that featured the songs and piano music of Franz Schubert. Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a German composer. He was something of a streak composer and wrote music for solo piano almost exclusively. Inspired by his marriage to Clara, he composed almost nothing but art songs, most of them about love. His wife, Clara one of the great piano virtuosos of the nineteenth century, was also a gifted composer. Works I listened to such as miniatures Kindergartens (Scenes from Childhood), Album or die Eugene (Album for the Young), are suitable to be played on piano by children or beginners. By his own request, he was confined to an asylum where he died of dementia in 1856. Franz List (1811-1886) Franz List was not merely a composer and pianist?he was a sensation, perhaps the most colorful artistic composer of the nineteenth century. His father, who worked at the court of Count Shysters, gave him his first music lessons when he was six years old. List gave more than a thousand concerts, from Ireland to Turkey, from Sweden played at the keyboard with a lighted cigar between his fingers. Lists concerts in the asses became our modern-day piano recital. The majority of Lists piano compositions reflect his advanced virtuosity. He was a productive composer, and rote works at several levels of difficulty, some being manageable for intermediate and even beginner level pianists. Abscessed (Farewell) is a beautiful short piece based on an old Russian folk song and Engages Grid are examples of this less virtuosic style and are the two cases of Legalization I participated in. List hobnobbed with composers FRR ©d ©rice Chopin, Hector Burlier, Robert Schumann, and his daughter married Richard Wagner. His most famous achievement was the creation of what would become known as the symphonic poem, a kind of orchestral musical piece that calls to mind a poem, a story, or a painting. He observed that a program provided a means by which to protect the listener against a wrong poetical interpretation and to direct his attention to the poetical idea of the whole. In 1860, one of Lists rivals, Johannes Brahms, co-published a statement against him and other modern composers. By his death, he had written more than 700 compositions. FRR ©d ©rice Chopin (1810-1849) Chopin is considered Pollards greatest composer, although Chopin spent the rest of his life mainly in France, he became a voice for Polish musical nationalism. In Paris, Chopin found his delicate style didnt always charm he larger concert audiences, who had been exposed to the works of Franz Schubert and Ludwig Van Beethoven. FRR ©d ©rice Chopin concentrated his efforts on piano composition and was a solid influence on composers who admired him. Chopin was physically slight and somewhat sickly. He was also introverted and hated performing in public. Chopin was a piano virtuoso and a composer, but he never let the physical challenges of the piano surpass his basic musical ideas. Chopin was a rarity among Romantic composers?he wrote only works for solo piano or ensemble pieces in which the dream-like nocturnes embodied the spirit of musical Romanticism. He formed a friendship with Franz List and Chopin received the first key endorsement from an exceptional contemporary when Robert Schumann, reviewing Chopping Pop. 2 Variations in the Alignment musicales Getting (his first published article on music), declared: Hats off, gentlemen! A genius.. Chopping innovations in style, musical form, and harmony, and his association of music with nationalism were influential throughout and after the late Romantic period. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Born in Hamburg, Germany, on May 7, 1833, Brahms as the great master of symphonic and sonata style in the second half of the 19th century. He can be viewed as the hero of the Classical tradition of Joseph Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. During this term, I listened to the German Requiem (Nine Deutsche Requiem), Abrahams Lullaby and Brahmas Violin Concerto in D major. The music of Brahms unfolds as patterns of pure, abstract sound within the stiff limits of traditional forms. While Brahms could write lovely romantic melodies, he was, in fact, a developer in the tradition of Bach and Beethoven. Brahms employed the art of laying double stops, a technique in which a violinist holds or stops two and never wrote an opera, nor did he ever write in the characteristic 19th century form of the tone poem. He strongly believed in absolute music, music that does not rely upon a concrete scene or narrative as the tone poem does. It is instrumental music free of text or any pre-existing program. His works were labeled old-fashioned by the New German School whose principal figures included F. List and Wagner. Brahms admired some of Wagers music and admired List as a great pianist, but in 1860, he attempted to organize a public protest against some of the wilder excesses of their music. Although Brahms may often be regarded as one of the last defenders of the Romantic Period, he was a supporter of form and logic within his works in contrast to the opulence and excesses of many of his contemporaries. Hector Burlier (1803-1869) Hector Burlier was one of the most original figures in the history of music. He was born in 1803 near the mountain city of Greenbelt, France. He had no regular training in music theory or composition and little exposure to the music of the great masters. In his mind, there was always a connection between music and the written word. Burlier rarely used such standard forms as sonata-allegro or theme and variations. Instead, he preferred to create forms that flowed from the particular narrative of the story at hand. Burlier created the first program symphony a symphony with the usual three, four, or five movements in which the individual movements together tell a tale or depict a succession of particular events or scenes. This term I listened to Symphonies Fantasies, Pop. 14 Songs Dune Unit Du Sabbath and found wild swings of mood expressed in the music. Burlier called for enormous performing forces. He added new instruments to the orchestra and called for traditional instruments to be played in non-traditional ways. Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) and Ballet Music The tone poems which were a one-movement work for orchestra captured the emotions and events of a story through the soaring music of Peter Tchaikovsky. He excelled in an artistic genre that others did not: ballet. In his early years, Tchaikovsky entered the Moscow Conservatory in his native Russia. Tchaikovsky realized that the ballet required Just the compositional skills that he possessed. His genius was to create one resting melody and mood after another?to fashion one vivid scene and then move on to the next. Tchaikovsky short-segment style proved perfect for the ballet. Now, the terms Russian and ballerina seem inseparably interconnected. Tchaikovsky gift was not in the development of thematic material but in the invention of striking melodies. Peter Tchaikovsky is known today primarily for his tone poems, such as Romeo and Juliet and The 1812 Overture, and ballets, such as Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, which I enjoyed watching in their full length on Youth. From the Baroque to the early Romantic age, opera was typically neatly divided into reiterative (plain speech or recitative, which advanced the story) and songs (which paused the story to highlight key elements). In the mid/late Romantic age, opera tended to embrace continuous narrative, in which the story unfolds constantly throughout both speech, recitative and songs. The distinction between recitative and songs was often blurred, as recitative became more lyrical, and songs came to lack principal styles of opera -P Italian and German. Italian opera was to a great extent a vehicle of good melodies and exciting tunes with less emphasis on drama, while German operas were more concerned with drama and perhaps less so with memorable tunes. Two of the most prominent composers from this period are Verdi in Italy and Wagner in Germany. Italy Italian opera experienced a dramatic shift in tone throughout the Romantic period. The early Romantic was dominated by lively comic opera, the mid/late Romantic by starkly serious opera. Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) twenty-six operas, La Scalar Opera House in Milan, Nabisco launched Verses career in Europe. He worked for the overthrow of the Austrian government, which then ruled most of Italy. By coincidence, the name Verdi (Green in Italian). La Trivia (1853) The Woman Gone Astray, Aid (1871. Verdi replaces simple recitative, accompanied only by basso continuo, with orchestral accompanied recitative accompanist (recitative accompanied by the orchestra instead of merely the harpsichord; the opposite of simple recitative) . He is a composer squarely in the tradition of Italian bell canto opera, he pays attention to the solo voice and on a lyrical, beautiful vocal line. In 1861, Verdi wrote the stunning La Forgo del Destine commissioned by the Imperial Theatre in SST. Petersburg, Russia. The music of the overture begins with the famous Fate Motif, an ominous three E notes in unison in the brass. His grand-opera Aid premiered in Cairo as part of the celebrations of the opening of the Suez Canal and became an instant success. I saw the opera Aid with my Mother when I was a young girl at what was then the Pacific Coliseum. Aid is a drama on a religious theme, full of processions, prayers, a baptism and naturally, a crusade. I remember seeing live elephants and horses which performed on the giant Egyptian themed stage. Giuseppe Verdi wrote opera for popular appeal, full of excellent, melodic arias and choruses which are still popular today and performed regularly throughout the world a hundred years after is death. Germany In the Romantic period, serious German opera finally attained prominence equal to its Italian and French counterparts. Romantic German opera typically featured supernatural characters and plots drawn from Germanic mythology; in some cases, ordinary humans are drawn into supernatural matters. Richard Wagner (1813-1883) The Romantic imagination chose to model itself on the Middle Ages. The tantalizing discovery of ancient German literature went hand in hand with the growth functional tradition of German opera, one led by Richard Wagner. Wagner could barely play the IANA, let alone any instrument, and was an indifferent score reader. However, he composed heroic themes and powerful orchestral climaxes. The compositions I listened to were Tristan undo Soled {Lifebelts} (1865), and Deer Ring des Unbelieving (The Ring of the Unbelieving) a set of four operas. The Ring cycle together tells the tale vociferating legend. Wagner created his Ring by adapting the myths from Iceland and Germany. Wagers music drama differs from predictable Italian opera in many ways. Aria, recitative, duet, would no longer bring the dramatic action to a halt in order to spotlight the vocal flourishes of a soloist. Instead, he wrote a seamless flow of identical solo singing and recitative, what is called endless melody. With Wagner, the orchestra is everything. The thoughts, both conscious and unconscious, of the main characters are projected through short, suggestive musical motives called a leitmotif (signature tune), a distinctive unit of music designed to represent a character, object, or idea. Wagner removed ensemble singing almost entirely. Wagner banished the melodic aria to the wings. He avoided melodic repetition, symmetry, and regular cadences?all things that can make a tune catchy; his melodies are long-flowing, nonrestrictive, and not particularly song-like. Wagner epitomizes chromatics in 19th century. As the tuneful aria decreased in quality, the role of the orchestra increased. A bigger orchestra demanded, in turn, more forceful singers. To be heard above an orchestra of nearly a hundred players, large, specially trained voices were needed: the so-called Wagnerian tenor and Wagnerian soprano. Wagner asked why anyone after Beethoven bothered to write symphonies at all. Wagner solicited the money to build his own opera house at Bayreuth, Germany. Here the first Bayreuth Festival took place. During the second half of the nineteenth century, a contrasting type of opera developed in Europe, one more in tune with the social truths of the day called realistic opera. Georges Baizes Carmen (1875) Baizes realistic opera Carmen is full of alluring melodies including the well-known and beloved Hibernia. The Hibernia, which introduces the character Carmen, makes use of a then-popular Spanish song. Hibernia means the thing from Havana. Careens rich melody, and finally her soaring voice on the word L amour (Love) as the chorus accompanies is instantly recognizable and incredibly virtuosic. In shaping these melodies, Baize borrowed phrases from various Spanish popular songs, folk songs, and flamenco tunes which were folk songs of southern Spain infused with gypsy elements. In France, Baize was a most prominent composer, and two of his operas remain in the repertoire to this day. Carmen is a story of tragic love and has many famous arias, including the Flower song, the Toreadors song and the Hibernia. Listening to the mezzo soprano voice accompanied by piano and a mixed-voice choir, I hear the use of rubout to emphasis the importance of the text at the end of the excerpt. Giaconda Puccini La bob ©me 1896) Giaconda Puccini (1858-1924) Italian realistic opera goes by its own distinct name, version opera. Version is Italian for realism. Puccini most famous of all version operas?is La bob ©me or Bohemian Life. A bohemian is somebody, often a writer or an artist, who does not live according to the conventions of society. La bob ©me is well known for its glorious arias and duets, above all the You Tube video of Lucian Protractor sings Chew gelid mania. I hear the gradual path of his voice moving from low to high, speech to song, over the course fever more passionate and increasingly beautiful romantic work. The aria typically starts syllabicate as if the character is beginning a conversation. As the speakers ardor grows, the voice gains passion and becomes grander, with the strings doubling the melody to add warmth Parisian life, including the hustle and bustle of Christmas Eve in the street outside the Cafe © Moms and dawn on a winter day on the outskirts of the city. The Late Romantic Symphony and Concerto The late Romantics wallowed happily in symphonies with more than four movements, symphonies of enormous length, and symphonies with voices, organs and other instruments usually inessential to the symphony orchestra. The orchestra itself so far exceeded the modest of Classical proportions that it certainly altered the symphonic form. Throughout the Romantic era, composers continued to produce these large- scale orchestral statements, and persisted in calling them symphonies. For a while, the late-Romantic symphony seemed a traditional impulse a clinging to the warm colors and tonal comforts of a large orchestra in the face of a sharp modernist sensibility. Notable composers of symphonies and concertos in the late-Romantic period include Peter Tchaikovsky, Antonio Devoid and Gustavo Mailer. Kindergà ¤rtners (Songs on the Death of Children) is a song cycle, a sort of concept album for voice and orchestra by Gustavo Mailer. The works are written in Mailers late-romantic style, and conveys a mixture of feelings: anguish, fantasy resuscitation of the children, resignation. The final song ends in a major key and a mood of transcendence. Throughout the nineteenth century, the symphonic movements got progressively longer, and so composers wrote fewer symphonies. Schumann and Brahms composed only four; Mendelssohn, five; Tchaikovsky, six; and Devoid, Burner, and Mailer, nine each. No one approached the 40-odd symphonies of Mozart, to say nothing of the 106 of Haydn. A Classical concerto may last twenty minutes, a Romantic one forty. Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) Russia was one of the first countries to develop its own national style of art music, one that was distinct and separate from the traditions of German orchestral music and the operatic styles of Italy and Germany. A nationalist spirit was passed too group of five young composers (Brooding, Cut, Balkier, Rims-Karaoke, and Mussorgsky) centered in SST. Petersburg, whose aim it was to write purely Russian music free of European influence. Modest Mussorgsky composed a boldly inventive tone poem, Night on Bald Mountain (1867, used prominently in Walt Disneys Fantasia), and an imaginative set of miniatures (character pieces) called Pictures at an Exhibition (1874). Pictures at an Exhibition give listeners the impression of enjoying a leisurely stroll into and through an art gallery, moving from one image to the next. To provide harmony within the structure of these musical pictures, the Mussorgsky thought of combining a regular interlude, which he called Promenade. With the Promenade, we enter not any gallery, UT one filled with purely Russian art. The tempo is marked Fast but resolute, in the Russian manner. The meter continually shifts?a characteristic of folk music. The meter is irregular, as infill dance, with alternating five- and six-beat measures, and the melody is built on a pentatonic scale , which uses only five notes instead of the usual seven notes. Pictures at an Exhibition is now best known in the orchestrated version by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), completed in 1922. Perhaps by coincidence, the first attempts at making color motion pictures occurred about this same time. Ravels version greatly developed the impact of the music by replacing the black- and-white sounds of the piano with the blooming color of the full late-Romantic A violent social disruption that shook Europe was the outbreak of World War l. The strongest challenge to the authority of the Germans came from their enemies, the French. The earliest indications of modernism were French artists and writers, who abandoned the grandiose subjects and expressions of Romanticism. Impressionist artists wished to capture on canvas the freshness of their first impressions and were assonated with the continuous change in the appearance of their subjects through varied treatment of light and color. French composers began to ridicule the sentimentality of Romanticism and the lavish structures of German music which was said to be too pretentious and preposterous. This new music was given the name Impressionism. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) Debussy spent most of his time in the company of poets and painters. Pr ©elude leap ©s-midi dun fauna (Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun), and the symphonic poem La mere (The Sea, 1905), were the works I studied this term. The composer believed that music doesnt need to progress and evolve to be pleasing to the listener. To Debussy, color and texture might exist independent of the melody and, perhaps, overshadow it, preferring fleeting splashes of sound color rather than sweeping sinkable melodies or musical development. There are no repeating rhythms or clear-cut meters to push the Debussy music forward; instead of a melody as we know it, I hear a twisting, undulating swirl of sound. Debussy music honors the distinctive colors of instruments, especially woodwinds, to suggest vibrant moods and sensations. From Debussy forward, imposers began to think of color as an independent expressive element, capable of eliciting a strong emotional response. The technological advancements that led to the modern symphony orchestra transformed nineteenth-century music. Our reaction to the orchestra today is very different from the response of nineteenth-century listeners. Apart from the military cannon and the steam engine, the nineteenth-century orchestra produced the loudest sonic level of any human machine. The big sound?and the big contrasts were new and startling, and audiences packed ever-larger concert halls to hear them.
